HL Deb 28 February 2005 vol 670 cc6-7WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will delist the Commonwealth Institute, in accordance with the unanimous wish of the trustees, in order to allow the trustees to eliminate the maintenance costs, realise the capital value of the site, and apply the resulting funds to the proposed new Centre for Commonwealth Education at Cambridge. [HL1389]

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department for Culture, Media and Sport (Lord McIntosh of Haringey)

The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport has received an application to remove this building from the statutory list, and has sought the advice of English Heritage, her statutory adviser on listing. She will decide, in due course, whether this building continues to meet the criteria for listing.

The Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 allows the Secretary of State to take into account only factors relating to the building's architectural or historic interest, when deciding whether it should remain on the list.
