HL Deb 07 September 2004 vol 664 c139WA
Lord Morris of Manchester

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What progress there has been in countering the spread of methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus-related conditions among patients in National Health Service hospitals; and what consideration has been given to compensating patients who have been infected and dependants of those who have died. [HL3810]

Lord Warner

Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other healthcare associated infections are prevented and contained by good infection control. Implementation ofWinning Ways—Working together to reduce Healthcare Associated Infection in England and Towards Cleaner Hospitals and Lower Rates of Infection will improve clinical practice and reduce infection rates. In addition, we have a new target to reduce MRSA infections.

We have no plans to award compensation to patients with MRSA in National Health Service trusts.
