What was the number of prison places available in England and Wales on 30 June; and what was the number of prisoners on the same date. [HL4422]

As at 30 June 2004, the useable operational capacity (which is the total number of prisoners that establishments can hold taking into account control, security and the proper operation of the planned regime) for the prison estate was 76,280 and the prison population was 74,490.
