What is the impact of environmental tobacco smoke on (a) the likelihood of pre-term pregnancy; and (b) foetal growth. [HL4922]

Lord Warner

The 1998 report of the Scientific Committee on Tobacco and Health gives details of the increase in risk of sudden infant death syndrome and acute lower respiratory infection from exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and the impact of environmental tobacco smoke on the likelihood of pre-term pregnancy and foetal growth. A copy of this report is in the Library.

The committee has been reviewing the research evidence published since 1998 and its updated report will be published alongside the White Paper on public health.
