HC Deb 27 May 2004 vol 421 c1781W
Mr. Dhanda

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make a statement on the effectiveness of the Safer City Project in reducing(a) road accidents and (b) road casualties in Gloucester. 176215]

Mr. McNulty

"Gloucester Safer City" was a demonstration project sponsored by the Department for Transport and ran from 1996 to 2001. It was the subject of full monitoring and conditions in Gloucester were compared with five control towns.

Compared with the control towns, the project showed that there was

  • 16.7 per cent. saving in all injury accidents
  • 36.9 per cent. saving in Killed or Seriously Injured accidents
  • 16 per cent. reduction in drivers exceeding speed limits
  • 65 per cent. residents said road safety had improved in the past five years

Full details are given in the Research Report on "Gloucester Safer City" which can be found in the Road Safety section of the Department for Transport website.
