HC Deb 25 May 2004 vol 421 cc1572-3W
Mr. Dhanda

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made to the Government of Rwanda in connection with the gangs of Hutu militia operating in the Congo. [174988]

Mr. Mullin

The presence of armed Rwandan Hutu groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo, dating back to the Rwandan genocide of 1994, is one of the key barriers to lasting peace in the Great Lakes region because of the threat they pose to Rwandan stability.

The UK has consistently pressed all parties in the region, including the Government of Rwanda, to co-operate on disarming these groups and resettling them back in Rwanda.
