HC Deb 14 May 2004 vol 421 cc637-8W
Simon Hughes

To ask the Parliamentary Secretary, Department for Constitutional Affairs how many people(a) applied for and (b) received legal aid in Greater London, broken down by borough, in each of the last seven years. [173197]

Mr. Lammy

The Legal Services Commission is unable to answer in fall the question asked. The Commission will shortly be able to provide details of the applications received from suppliers for funding, and funding certificates issued but only for the last four years, broken down by its London bid zones which largely equate to the London boroughs. This information will not be a wholly accurate representation of the number of people assisted in each London borough, since applicants can be assisted by lawyers based in different geographical areas from those where the applicants are resident and vice versa.
