HC Deb 11 May 2004 vol 421 c301W
Dr. Murrison

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what psychological support is available in schools to help children with continence conditions. [171135]

Margaret Hodge

The joint DfES/Department of Health guidance, "Supporting Pupils with Medical Needs: A Good Practice Guide", is designed to help schools draw up policies on managing medication in schools and to put effective systems in place to support individual pupils with medical needs.

Individual schools are best placed to decide on arrangements to meet the needs of their pupils and may decide that a counselling service, for example, would best serve the interests of a child experiencing anxiety or depression as a result of continence difficulties. Children may also receive help from specialist mental health professionals, many of whom will be located within the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.
