In the Rochdale local authority area (which includes the constituency of Heywood and Middleton) there were 16 fatal casualties in 1997 and 11 fatal casualties in 2002. The number of people seriously injured in road accidents increased from 83 in 1997 to 84 in 2002, a rise of 1 per cent. Estimates on the basis of parliamentary constituencies will become available in the summer and I shall write to my hon. Friend with figures for Heywood and Middleton and place a copy of my letter in the Libraries of the House.

The numbers of people seriously injured in road accidents reduced from 117 in 1997 to 85 in 2002, a fall of 27 per cent.
