§ Mr. Stephen TwiggThere are safeguards in Sections 406 and 407 of the Education Act 1996 against the promotion and pursuit of partisan political views or activities. Governing Bodies, teachers and LEAs must take reasonable steps to offer pupils a balanced presentation of opposing views where political or controversial issues are brought to their attention. With the introduction of Citizenship education as a statutory subject, pupils have an opportunity to develop their political awareness, critical thinking and the nature of prejudice including racism. All schools have been sent guidance on citizenship education which covers teaching of sensitive and controversial issues.
