To ask the Secretary of State for Health what the latest estimated cost is of a hip replacement operation on the NHS. [162790]

According to the National Schedule of Reference Costs 2003, the national average cost of a primary hip replacement undertaken by a National Health Service trust as a planned elective inpatient admission is £4,660.
