HL Deb 18 March 2004 vol 659 c67WA
Lord Acton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What plans they have to test the anti-obesity, anti-smoking pill (Rimonabant). [HL1878]

Lord Warner

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, on behalf of the Licensing Authority, grants marketing authorisations for medicinal products provided that satisfactory quality, safety and efficacy data have been submitted for the medicinal product for use in the proposed indication and that the risk benefit is deemed favourable. A marketing authorisation has not been issued for Rimonabant. It would be for a pharmaceutical company to carry out appropriate tests to demonstrate that the safety, efficacy and quality are satisfactory to support the anti-obesity and anti-smoking claims for Rimonabant.
