HC Deb 18 March 2004 vol 419 c405W
Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what proportion of the UK population(a) owned a car 20 years ago and (b) own a car today. [162039]

Mr. Jamieson

Surveys show the proportion of households in GB owning one or more cars rising from 60 per cent. in 1981 to 74 per cent. of all households in 2001, the latest year for which this information is published.

This corresponds to 27 cars per hundred people in 1981 and 42 cars per hundred people in 2001.
