§ Jim KnightTo ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what assessment has been made of the impact on the tourism industry of schools moving to a six term school year with shorter summer holidays. [160936]
§ Mr. CabornThe decisions of Local Education Authorities on reform of the school year are primarily based on educational priorities. Research commissioned by the English Tourism Council in 2001 suggested that the total amount of UK trips in the family tourism market would be unlikely to change significantly as a result of a six-year term, but that the tourism season would be more constant over an extended period. Spreading the benefit of domestic tourism more evenly through the year in this way would encourage the development of more sustainable tourism.
