HC Deb 12 March 2004 vol 418 cc1826-7W
Mr. Burstow

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many MRSA reports have been(a) voluntarily and (b) mandatorily received in (i) England and (ii) each NHS region since 1996 (A) in total and (B) as a proportion of the population.[157595]

Miss Melanie Johnson

The tables show the number of reported bacteraemia (blood stream) infections and rates per 100,000 head of the population for each region. Although data for the voluntary reporting system are available from 1996 they are known to be incomplete. Mandatory reporting was introduced in April 2001 and data for the first two years are provided.

Number of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) laboratory reports—and rate per 100,000 population—mandatory surveillance.
