HC Deb 02 March 2004 vol 418 cc880-1W
Mr. Nigel Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what assessment he has made of the benefits of cycling to the health of the nation. [156103]

Miss Melanie Johnson

The Department recommends that adults participate in at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity, at least five days a week and that young people participate in physical activity of at least moderate intensity for one hour per day. Leisurely cycling (around 10 miles per hour) represents one way of meeting these recommendations.

Regular cycling improves fitness significantly, reducing the risk of obesity, strokes, coronary heart disease, certain types of cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis. There are also benefits for mental health, with evidence of reduced depression and stress, improved self-esteem and confidence in performing physical tasks.
