HC Deb 22 June 2004 vol 422 c1332W
Mr. Hancock

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made to the Government of Indonesia on the imprisonment of Reverend Ribnaldy Damanik; and if he will make it his policy to recognise Reverend Damanik as a prisoner of conscience. [179538]

Mr. Mike O'Brien

The British embassy in Jakarta followed the trial of Reverend Damanik closely and is in contact with a number of NGOs and community groups connected to his case. We last discussed Reverend Damanik's case with the Indonesian ambassador in November 2003. We will continue to remind the Indonesian Government of their human rights obligations and stress to them the importance of a fair and transparent judicial system.
