HC Deb 15 June 2004 vol 422 cc794-5W
19. Syd Rapson

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent discussions he has had with the(a) Turkish and (b) Greek Governments about the future of Cyprus. [178644]

Mr. MacShane

I refer my hon. Friend to the answer I gave earlier today to my hon. Friend the Member for Warrington, North. The Government, at the 26 April General Affairs and External Relations Council in Brussels and the 17 May UK-Turkey summit, and via our Ambassadors in Ankara and Athens, have been in regular contact with the Turkish and Greek Governments following the 24 April referendums on the UN Secretary-General's Cyprus settlement plan.

Mr. Lyons

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make representations to the Turkish Government on protecting cultural sites in Turkish-occupied Cyprus. [178134]

Mr. MacShane

The Government attaches importance to the protection of cultural sites throughout Cyprus. We urge the authorities on both sides of the island to co-operate for the protection and preservation of Cyprus's cultural heritage for the benefit of all Cypriots.
