To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how much has been spent on the defence of judicial review cases which the Government(a) won and (b) lost in each year since 1997. [173301]

[holding answer 19 May 2004]: The records of Home Office expenditure on judicial review cases do not indicate how much is attributable to cases which are won or lost. The amounts paid by the Home Office to the Treasury Solicitor for handling judicial review cases from May 1997 were as follows. The figures comprise Treasury Solicitor's charges and disbursements, including counsel's fees.
