HC Deb 23 July 2004 vol 424 c802W
Mr. Paterson

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what her estimate is of the financial contribution to the economy of commercial sea fishing. [184709]

Mr. Bradshaw

The recent report by the Prime Minister's Strategy Unit, "Net Benefits: A sustainable and profitable future For UK fishing", estimates the UK catching industry lands over £540 million in catches each year, resulting in between £800 and £1,200 million of directly related economic activity in the UK. This estimate does not include indirect expenditure arising from commercial sea fishing.
