HL Deb 22 July 2004 vol 664 cc82-3WA
Lord Newby

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How much additional stamp duty would have been raised in 2003–04 if Contracts for Difference had been liable to the duty at the same rate as shares. [HL3937]

Lord McIntosh of Haringey

An estimated £800 million stamp duty would have been due in 2003–04 if Contracts for Difference had been within the scope of stamp duty and liable at the same rate as shares. This estimate does not include any allowance for behavioural changes, which could significantly reduce the yield.
