§ Lord Sainsbury of TurvilleAll governments since 1965 have supported the principle of gradual phasing-in of metrication. This administration has however sought and secured an agreement within the EC that, where metric units are required to be used in trade, imperial units may continue in use as supplementary30WA indications until the end of 2009. This staged approach provides those who are less comfortable with metric measurements with a fair and reasonable period of acclimatisation to the metric system.
