HL Deb 28 January 2004 vol 656 c51WA
Lord Willoughby de Broke

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Further to the Written Answer by the Lord Sainsbury of Turville on 5 January (WA 23), what is the cost per megawatt of capacity installed for (a) oil-powered generators, (b) gas-powered generators, (c) nuclear-powered generators and (d) coal-powered generators. [HL762]

Lord Sainsbury of Turville

The department does not collect data on the capacity cost for different forms of electricity generation. Figures used in the course of modelling work for the 2003 energy White Paper suggested the following costs for new plant for each of the four technologies in £/MW:

£
Oil 1,000,000
Gas 400,000
Nuclear 1,300,000
Coal 1,100,000

Total generation costs for each technology measured in terms of £/MWh will depend on the cost of fossil fuels, the efficiency and load factors achieved by each type of plant and the discount rate.
