To ask the Secretary of State for Health pursuant to the answer of 4 February 2004,Official Report, column 967W, on medical students, what assessment he has made of the numbers of female doctors working (a) in general practice and (b) in hospitals wishing to (i) work part-time and (ii) take career breaks; and what impact this is having on the NHS. [155683]

The number of female doctors working in hospitals and in general practice who are part time is shown in the table. Information on the number of doctors who take career breaks is not available.

The proportion of staff who are working part time and the impact of this on participation in the workforce is factored into the Department's and the National Health Service's workforce planning processes.
