Mr. Cousins

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department to whom his Department distributes expenditure on research and development; how many staff are employed as a result; and how many research establishments(a) the Department and (b) its agencies have in England and Wales. [154361]

The Home Office funds research by the department's Research Development and Statistics Directorate, which undertakes a wide range of research supporting the development of policy. There are also a number of directorates who conduct physical science research including the Police Scientific Development Branch. Scientific and social research is also commissioned by the Home Office policy directorates and its executive agencies and non-departmental public bodies.

The total number of Home Office staff involved in research and development in England and Wales is 1,135. A breakdown of these organisations, the staff numbers and the location of the organisation follows.

The regions listed in the table correspond to the boundaries of the Government Offices:
