HC Deb 09 February 2004 vol 417 c1299W
Mr. Hoyle

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what the cost to farmers in Lancashire for disposal of fallen cattle stock will be. [153442]

Mr. Bradshaw

No assessment has been made of costs to Lancashire farmers. However, we recognise that many livestock farmers will face increased costs as a result of the ban on on-farm burial of fallen stock. That is why the Government and the farming industry are working together to set up a voluntary low cost national scheme which will assist farmers in meeting those costs.

Mr. Hoyle

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs how long the subsidy for the removal of fallen stock will last. [153443]

Mr. Bradshaw

Defra and the devolved Administrations will subsidise the National Fallen Stock Scheme on a digressive basis for its first three years of operation only. Thereafter, the scheme will be expected to be self-financing.
