HC Deb 05 February 2004 vol 417 cc1033-4W
Chris Grayling

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills if he will make a statement on the pay differentials between teaching staff in schools, further education colleges and higher education institutions. [152690]

Alan Johnson

The statutory pay and conditions of service for teachers in the maintained schools sector in England and Wales are based on the recommendations of an independent pay review body—the School Teachers' Review Body.

The Government play no part in setting the levels of pay in the higher education and further education sectors as universities and further education colleges are independent and autonomous bodies. Pay levels are subject to negotiations between employers and the representative trade union bodies, and will therefore vary from institution to institution.
