HC Deb 05 February 2004 vol 417 cc1021-2W
Chris Grayling

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what estimate he has made of the cost to higher education institutions of bidding to become a Centre of Excellence in Learning and Teaching. [152649]

Alan Johnson

Neither I nor the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) have made any estimates of this nature as the costs will be variable. However, the bidding process for Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning has been designed by HEFCE to keep additional costs to a minimum, while ensuring a rigorous selection process. At stage one, institutions will be able to draw on existing practice and readily available information. At stage two, institutions will be provided with additional funding as a contribution to their costs.
