To ask the Secretary of State for Health what research(a) his Department and (b) the Food Standards Agency has commissioned into the relationship between alcohol consumption and alcohol advertising. [152811]

The most recent review of the research on alcohol consumption and advertising was undertaken by my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister's strategy unit as part of its work on developing the Government's Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy for England. Its Interim Analytical Report, published on 19 September 2003, indicated that the evidence on the relationship between alcohol advertising and alcohol consumption was complex—certain studies suggested that there was a link between advertising and consumption, while other studies suggested that there was no such link.
