As National Statistician I have been asked to reply to your recent question on how many teenage pregnancies there were in each year since 2000. (152516)The numbers of teenage pregnancies in England and Wales, in 2000 and 2001 (the latest year for which figures are available), are shown below. Figures shown are for conceptions to women aged under 18, because the target set by the Government Strategy on Teenage Pregnancy is for this age-group.

Provisional figures for the most recently available year were first published in Health Statistics Quarterly, the latest edition of which also shows provisional estimates for March quarter 2002. This publication is available in the libraries of both Houses. Provisional estimates for the calendar year 2002 will be published in Health Statistics Quarterly later this month.
