To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions how many people aged over 70 years are in receipt of council tax benefit in Scotland, broken down by(a) local authority area and (b) parliamentary constituency. [167821]

The number of council tax benefit recipients aged over 70 in Scotland at May 2002 is 179,000. Notes:

  1. 1. The data refers to benefit units, which may be a single person or couple.
  2. 2. The figure is rounded to the nearest thousand.
  3. 3. Council tax benefit data excludes second adult rebate cases.
  4. 4. The figure refers to cases where the claimant and/or partner are aged over 70.
  5. 5. The figure is based on a 1 per cent. sample and therefore subject to a degree of sampling Variation.
