HC Deb 30 April 2004 vol 420 c1360W
Sir Archy Kirkwood

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department for what reasons the asylum appeals of(a) Fariborz Gravindi, (h) Mokhtar Haydary and (c) Faroq Haidari were dismissed; under what circumstances they would be allowed to remain in the UK; and what representations he has received on their cases. [163129]

Mr. Browne

All Home Office records relating to individuals are confidential. I am therefore not able to comment on individual cases. I have however written to the hon. Member.

Mrs. Curtis-Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what proportion of failed asylum seekers absconded in the last 12 months. [165835]

Mr. Browne

Information on the number or proportion of asylum applicants who have absconded is not available except by examination of individual case-files at disproportionate cost.

Some asylum seekers who have absconded may have left the UK voluntarily; others may remain in the UK illegally. Applicants do not always inform the Immigration Service prior to leaving the UK. We are making improvements in the area of contact management as detailed in the White Paper: Secure Borders, Safe Haven: Integration with Diversity in Modern Britain, paragraph 4.42.
