HC Deb 26 April 2004 vol 420 c813W
Ms Shipley

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what requirement there is on head teachers in private schools to report to the police allegations of sexual abuse of pupils by school employees. [165943]

Margaret Hodge

Proprietors of independent schools are under the same duty as governing bodies of maintained schools to safeguard and promote the welfare of their pupils. They must comply with DfES Circular 10/95, "Protecting Children from Abuse: The Role of the Education Service". This guidance includes advice about the action to take following allegations of suspected abuse of pupils by a member of staff, including referral to child protection agencies.
