The Metropolitan Borough of Wirral is a partner in the Merseyside Gateway Project which received £370,000 from the New Opportunities Fund to create a website depicting the history and growth of the Port of Liverpool and its environs. 710 (out of 20,000 overall) images from Wirral Archives and Birkenhead Reference Library have been selected for the site—these include a number of Birkenhead related documents including several photographs and other documents from the Cammell Laird archive. The council's contribution to the project was over £1,000.
