Further to the Written Answer by the Baroness Scotland of Asthal on 5 February (WA 114), what has been the effect on the prison population of the 355 new criminal offences within the remit of the Home Office which have been created since 1997. [HL1544]

The number of people sent to prison between 1998 and 2002 in connection with the offences referred to is 212 (9 in 1998, 30 in 1999, 41 in 2000, 43 in 2001, 89 in 2002).
