§ Mr. HuttonAll practitioners aged over 65 may continue to practice if it is regarded by their employer as being in the interest of the service. Employment contracts may be extended for one year at a time, until the age of 70. National health service trusts may employ practitioners over the age of 70 but it is the trust's responsibility to ensure that the practitioner is suitably qualified and fit, both mentally and physically to undertake the duties of the post.
The Department of Health has published guidance "Reviewing your retirement options: Consultants and senior hospital doctors", to support consultants who wish to continue working beyond the retirement age.
