To ask the Secretary of state for Health how many heart by-pass operations have been carried out by the NHS in the last 12 months for which figures are available; and how many were carried out in the same period in(a) 2000, (b) 1998, (c) 1994, (d) 1990 and (e) 1986. [127444]

The national service framework for coronary heart disease and NHS Plan targets for an extra 6,000 heart operations by April were met a year early.

The table shows the number of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedures carried out in 2001 (latest available figures), 2000, 1998, 1994 and 1990. Figures are not available for the period before 1989–90.
