To ask the Secretary of State for Health what the average number of hours worked per week by doctors in training were in England in the last year for which figures are available. [127375]

Mr. Hutton

The actual hours worked by junior doctors are not monitored centrally. We do however measure average maximum hours in order to assess compliance with the New Deal. The last occasion these figures were collated was in March 2003. This data revealed that out of nearly 32,000 junior doctors, about 90 per cent. were working less than 56 hours a week.
