Donor screening procedures as advised by the Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Blood and Tissues for Transplant (MSBT) are very effective and all transplant co-ordinators are required to ensure all the relevant data are collected and screening tests performed. This information is double-checked by the 159W UK Transplant duty office. As a result there have been very few recorded cases of transmission of any of the serious blood borne viruses.
