To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what the expenditure on non-departmental public bodies was(a) in the last year for which figures are available and (b) in 1996–97. [133662]

Total spending by non-departmental public bodies for 1998–99 to 2002–03 is shown as follows. Data on a comparable basis is not readily available for earlier years. For each department, the total of their NDPB spending is contained within their Departmental Expenditure Limit (DEL), so that any increase in spending on their NDPBs is offset elsewhere within their total DEL.
