§ The Prime MinisterUnited Nations Security Council resolution 1483 affirmed the need for accountability for crimes and atrocities committed by the previous Iraqi regime. We fully support this, as do the US. We believe it is for the Iraqi people to decide how to bring those responsible to justice, with suitable international help. The Governing Council is developing the idea of a Special Iraqi Tribunal to prosecute those suspected of serious human rights abuses under the former regime. No final decision has yet been reached.
