HC Deb 20 November 2003 vol 413 c1409W
Mr. Burstow

To ask the Secretary of State for Health for (1) what reasons the Department's Social Care Director is not a member of the Department's Board; [139142]

(2) what (a) accountabilities and (b) reporting lines the Social Care Director will have in respect of staff in the Department of (i) Health and (ii) Education and Skills. [139143]

Dr. Ladyman

The national director for social care at the Department of Health will be accountable for strengthening the relationships the Department has with social care in local government and elsewhere and for ensuring that all policy development in the Department starts by thinking about the whole health and social care system.

The national director will report to the director of strategy, a member of the Department's management board. All board members will have responsibilities for aspects of social care, through the teams they manage. No other national director is a board member. The national director will work closely with the Department for Education and Skills and other Government Departments but will be accountable only to the Department for Health.
