HC Deb 18 November 2003 vol 413 c721W
Norman Baker

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what assessment she has undertaken of the environmental impact of refilling and reusing printer cartridges. [139146]

Mr. Morley

The Government have not undertaken an assessment on the environmental impact of refilling and reusing printer cartridges. However, industry figures suggest that the UK imports 10 million toner and 30 million inkjet cartridges each year, which produce about 20,000 tonnes of waste at the end of their life, industry estimates that, at present, some 30–40 per cent., equivalent to 6–8,000 tonnes of printer cartridges are diverted from landfill for reuse and recycling.
