§ Baroness Symons of Vernham DeanThe European Commission is independent of any particular member state or group of member states. As Guardian of the Treaties, it is responsible for safeguarding the interests of the Union as a whole. Concerning the protection of minorities, the Commission will continue to play an important role through its capacity to propose act ion under Article 13 TEC to combat discrimination based on sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation.
