To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs how many(a) incinerators and (b) waste to energy plants handle waste collected by local authorities in the UK; and where they are located. [100473]

There are sixteen facilities which burn municipal waste in the UK at the following locations.

Bolton (Manchester)

Cleveland (Billingham)

Coventry

Dundee

Dudley

Edmonton (North London)

SELCHP (Lewisham, London)
5W
Tyseley (Birmingham)

Kirklees

Lerwick (Shetlands)

Nottingham

Sheffield

Stoke

Wolverhampton

Isle of Wight (PDF)

Pebsham (RDF)

They all generate power and/or heat. The last two plants on the list burn refuse derived fuel (RDF) prepared from municipal waste.
