To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many neurology training places leading to consultant posts were available in England in each of the last five years. [118999]

The table shows the number of hospital medical staff in the training grades with a specialty in neurology from 1997 to September 2001.

The number of consultants in neurology has increased from 278 in September 1997 to 372 in March 2002, an increase of 34 per cent.
