HL Deb 27 June 2003 vol 650 c49WA
Lord Berkeley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Further to the Written Answer by the Lord Macdonald of Tradeston on 10 June (WA 20), how many lives are expected to be saved over a period of 40 years by the installation of the European rail traffic management system level 2 system D. [HL3341]

Lord Davies of Oldham

The ERTMS programme team has estimated that, over a period of 40 years, implementation of the European rail traffic management system (ERTMS) level 2 system D would save 56 "equivalent fatalities" through a reduction in the number of signals passed at danger, and 99 fatalities through people transferring from road to rail. These figures are not strictly comparable because they have been calculated using different methodologies.
