HC Deb 17 June 2003 vol 407 cc199-200W
Malcolm Bruce

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what plans the Government has to follow up issues arising from the Eleventh Meeting of the Commission for Sustainable Development. [119002]

Mr. Morley

[holding answer 13 June 2003]: The eleventh session of the Commission for Sustainable Development (CSD)agreed a reform package and new work programme which focus on results and actions rather than textual negotiations. The outcome holds some promise that CSD will be able to fulfil its task of monitoring progress in the implementation a the outcomes of the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development and taking policy decisions to address constraints and obstacles.

The UK is following up WSSD commitments in a number of ways, including through incorporating them into the Government's delivery planning system and taking them into account in the review of the sustainable development strategy for the UK, "A better quality of life". I refer the hon. Member to the Government's Memorandum on WSSD follow-up presented to the Environmental Audit Committee in February and which is deposited in the House Library. The UK will report to CSD on our progress and participate fully in its future sessions.
