HC Deb 16 July 2003 vol 409 cc352-3W
Mr. Reed

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what assessment he has made of the impact on staff morale and teacher retention of an Ofsted report that places a school in special measures; and if he will make a statement. [125224]

Mr. Miliband

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State receives a copy of the termly monitoring report from Ofsted on every school which is in special measures. These reports describe the current progress of the school against all the issues causing concern, and would inevitably cover staff morale and staff turnover where these are having a significant impact on progress. While some schools do experience these problems when they are first placed in special measures, there are also many examples of schools with high staff morale, associated with a strong determination to effect the much needed improvements.
