To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many(a) special advisers, (b) press officers, (c) civil servants, (d) advisers to civil servants and (e) permanent staff were working for the Wales Office in each year since 1996. [126473]

Mr. Hain

The Wales Office was created on 1 July 1999.

  1. (a) Until 12 June 2003 the Secretary of State for Wales had two special advisers, since then he has had one.
  2. (b) Since its inception the Wales Office has had a complement of three press officers (there has also been one three-month inward secondment for training purposes).
  3. (c) and (e) figures are published each year in the Departmental Report, the most recent of which was published in May 2003 as Cm 5928.
  4. (d) None.
